Limitless Broadcast has launched a custom timing data integration system to simplify remote sports production for events with complex timing needs, such as rugby. The scalable workflow is designed to ensure accurate timing data is seamlessly integrated into remote production environments, delivering a smoother experience for broadcasters and viewers alike.
Challenges of Timing Data in Remote Production
Unlike sports with continuous game clocks, such as football, rugby’s frequent stoppages make precise timing data essential. Traditionally, venues rely on systems from providers like Tissot or Swiss Timing, connecting analog cables to OB trucks to display time on scoreboards. This setup can be cumbersome, involving multiple parties and equipment, with limited troubleshooting options.
“We developed this system to address one of the less obvious but equally critical challenges in remote production,” said Claire Wilkie, CEO of Limitless Broadcast.
The Limitless Connect Module: A New Workflow for Timing Integration
Limitless’ in-house solution uses a Limitless Connect Module (LCM)—compact smart Peli-case boxes deployed at the venue. These LCMs connect directly to existing timing systems, sending real-time clock data over IP to Limitless’ cloud-based control interface. This enables remote monitoring, troubleshooting, and even virtual clock data testing before the event begins.
In collaboration with graphics partner MOOV, Limitless has developed a custom API integration for seamless clock feed access, making on-site hardware unnecessary. The setup allows MOOV’s Chyron Prime graphics systems at the Limitless facility to remotely handle matchday packages, making the entire process faster and more efficient.
Benefits of the New Workflow
- Reduced On-Site Presence: The system minimizes the need for on-site personnel, reducing logistical costs and complexity.
- Real-Time Monitoring and Testing: Limitless’ Master Control Room (MCR) can test and emulate clock data before the venue connection is live.
- Enhanced Resilience and Flexibility: Contingency plans allow seamless data streaming, even for venues without a timing system.
- Integrated Stats and Data: Through MOOV’s Aquarius cloud server, Limitless offers live statistical data, collaborating with major data providers like Stats Perform and Dorna.
“The product developed with Limitless is a real step forward in sports broadcasting,” noted George Obrey, MOOV’s Head of Graphics Operations. “Running timing data through the cloud with minimal on-site setup is cost-effective and resilient, adding value to our coverage, especially as we continue to support the growth of women’s sports.”
Proven Results and Future Potential
The workflow has successfully supported Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) and other events, demonstrating its scalability and robustness. Limitless plans to expand this solution across other sports and events, helping broadcasters enhance their coverage with high-quality, cost-effective solutions.
Limitless Broadcast’s new timing data solution is transforming remote sports production by improving timing accuracy, reducing on-site needs, and enabling flexible, scalable workflows. As cloud and IP technology continue to reshape sports broadcasting, Limitless is positioned to set new standards in efficiency and audience engagement.
