Fujifilm has announced the development of its first digital cinema camera, the GFX Eterna, marking the company’s official entry into the cinema camera market. Targeted at professional filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts, the GFX Eterna is designed to provide large-format visuals, modular flexibility, and cinematic-grade connectivity.
Key Features of the GFX Eterna
Set for release in 2025, the GFX Eterna aims to offer versatility and high-quality imaging capabilities for the professional market. Here are some of the key features and specifications that Fujifilm has shared:
- Box-Style Design: Built with modularity in mind, the GFX Eterna offers a compact, box-style body that can easily integrate with industry-standard setups, similar in form to the Sony FX6.
- Extensive Connectivity: Designed for cinema production, the camera includes essential ports, such as HDMI, SDI, Genlock, Ethernet, USB-C, 2-pin LEMO DC Out, and a V-lock battery plate, making it adaptable to a wide range of workflows and equipment.
- Large-Format Sensor: The camera features Fujifilm’s GFX 102MP CMOS II HS sensor, approximately 1.7 times larger than a 35mm sensor, delivering exceptional dynamic range, detail, and color depth.
- Powerful Processor: Equipped with the high-speed X-Processor 5, the GFX Eterna promises to handle large-format video files efficiently, with a focus on capturing lifelike visuals and rich color profiles.
“With the GFX Eterna, Fujifilm is ready to bring its renowned color science and high-resolution imaging to the cinema world,” said a Fujifilm spokesperson.
Possible Features and Accessories
While Fujifilm hasn’t confirmed built-in ND filters, the camera’s design suggests that a variable electronic ND filter system could be possible—a feature popular among professional filmmakers. Additionally, CFexpress Type B card support ensures high-speed data transfer for managing large video files. The camera will include status and menu screens for flexibility, enabling operation from different angles.
New Power Zoom GF Lens and Adapter
In addition to the camera, Fujifilm is developing a power zoom GF lens (32-90mm) and a G-to-PL mount adapter, broadening the camera’s compatibility with cinema-standard lenses. These accessories will be showcased alongside the GFX Eterna at InterBEE 2024 from Nov. 13-15, Japan’s largest media and entertainment event.
Fujifilm’s GFX Eterna is a bold step into the cinema camera market, aimed at delivering high-resolution, cinema-grade imaging with the flexibility and connectivity needed on modern film sets. As the camera debuts in 2025, it’s set to compete with other large-format cinema cameras and expand Fujifilm’s presence in the professional production landscape.
